Litreacha Nikos Kazantzakis

Níl a fhios agam an léann daoine litreacha níos mó. Níl a fhios agam an scríobhann daoine litreacha níos mó. Tá litreacha Nikos Kazantzakis (1883 -1957) léite agam, an té a scríobh Zorba the Greek agus The Last Temptation of Christ, an dá shaothar is iomráití leis. 875 leathanach atá ann agus gach aon litir ann léite agam.

Ní fhéadfainn an rud céanna a rá faoi gach úrscéal agus faoi gach leabhar filíochta a phiocas suas i mbliana, is é sin gur léas ó chlúdach go clúdach iad. Tá draíocht éigin ag baint leis an litir ach í a bheith dea-scríofa. Ní gá di a bheith dea-scríofa, fiú amháin. Nochtann an scríbhneoir a chroí, roinneann a phaisean, a anam, a racht, a ghrá lena chomhfhreagraí agus uaireanta braithimse, mar léitheoir, gur mise an comhfhreagraí aige, gur ag scríobh chugamsa atá sé. Ródhéanach anois freagra a chur chuige, faraor. Níl, dáiríre. Freagra chuige é seo, na focail seo, tar éis dom The Selected Letters of Nikos Kazantzakis, in eagar ag Peter Bien, a léamh (Princeton University Press, 2012).

Sea, a Nikos, ar shlí is litir chugatsa anois na focail seo. Agus tú san Eilvéis i mí Iúil, 1955, scríobh tú:
‘I’m planning to start my new work here: Letters to El Greco…. Yesterday a learned friend, von den Steinen, came to see me and told me that Petrarch wrote Letters to Cicero …’
Scríbhneoir mór litreacha agus litreacha á mbeartú aige, tamall sular cailleadh é, chuig duine a bhláthaigh sá séú haois déag. B’in Nikos duit, lán d’fhuinneamh go dtí an deireadh, lán de smaointe, lán d’anamúlacht. Cad a shílfeadh seisean agus scríbhneoirí a linne do ról an scríbhneora inniu, na literati in aois na twitterati? Is deacair a rá. Cad a shílfeadh sé do chultúr an lae inniu?

Bheadh áthas air a déarfainn gur Froinsias atá ar an bPápa nua. Scríobh sé féin Beatha N. Froinsias agus ba mhinic an nath Froinsiasach ‘Pax et bonum’  mar chríoch lena litreacha aige agus feicim i litir uaidh dar dáta 8 Meitheamh 1953 go ndeir sé:
‘During my illness I wrote several Franciscan haiku and I think they are good – brief, full of feeling and sense, full of Franciscan intimacy with God…’
Theastaigh uaidh litreacha a scríobh chuig El Greco, a chomh-Ghréagach, nó a chomh-Chréiteach is ceart a rá. Tabharfaidh sé seo blas duit de scóip na litreacha seo, sliocht as litir a scríobh sé ar an 13 Meán Fómhair, 1926 agus cuairt á tabhairt aige ar Toledo na Spáinne:

“I’ve arrived at El Greco’s high, ascetic base of operations. My heart was thumping during the entire trip from Madrid – how much I had craved this visit to the amazing Genosse [comrádaí] ever since I was a small child. ‘To realize at a mature age what you craved as a child: that is the destiny of the true human being.’  By dint of struggle, difficulty, and solely the soul’s impetus, I have realized almost everything I have desired. When I faced Toledo, entered it, began slowly, exhaustively, persistently to wander through the streets and bring the old buildings to life, then crossed the threshold and entered El Grecos’s garden and went up to his house in the Jewish quarter (El Greco loved the Jews so much that he lived the whole time in the Jews’ separate neighbourhood) – when all that had filled my hard skull, I once again blessed the moment I was born…”
Tá anam uasal álainn Nikos Kazantzakis sa sliocht sin. Is minic ag tagairt dó dá anam féin, á stiúradh trí chnoic is trí ghleanntáin an tsaoil seo. Cé na scríbhneoirí sa lá atá inniu ann a thagraíonn dá n-anam? Th’anam ’on ducs, is tearc a líon!

Is minic rudaí ráite i litir ag duine agus braitheann tú gur ag caint leat atá sé, os íseal nó go tréan. Is maith liom féin an stíl sin, go mór, caithfidh mé a rá. An scríbhneoir céanna, dá dtabharfaí deis dó, scriosfadh sé a lán dá raibh ráite aige agus chuirfeadh cló eile air, cló foirmiúil, agus sa tslí sin chaillfí an intimité sin, an dlúthchaidreamh sin, an neasacht sin atá an-luachmhar go deo.

Tar éis dom an leabhar a chríochnú, ransaíos an tInnéacs arís féachaint cé atá luaite ann agus ba liosta le háireamh iad. Luaitear Pelagius fiú, an misinéir a bhí inár measc roimh Phádraig Naofa. Eiriceach ab ea Pelagius. Níor ghéill sé do Pheaca an tSinsir. Bheadh Éire eile ar fad againn dá mba é Pelagius seachas Pádraig ár nÉarlamh againn. Eiriceach ab ea Nikos Kazantzakis leis. Tá sé dochreidte ar fad na naimhde go léir a bhí aige, naimhde i saol na litríochta, na polaitíochta is na heaglaise. Ordaigh an leabhar seo ó do leabharlann agus íoslódáil an scannán Zorba the Greek (mura bhfuil sé feicthe cheana agat) agus cuirfidh tú aithne ar dhuine eisceachtúil, duine a raibh sciatháin ar a chroí is ar a anam uair ar bith ar cuireadh peann ina ghlac.

An Bhanríon Sheabá le Hadewijch

Chuig Solomh tháinig
An Bhanríon Sheabá
D’fhonn gaois a fháil uaidh.
Is nuair a tháinig sí ina lathair go deimhin
Thuirling a chuid iontas uirthi ina shlaoda chomh tobann sin
Gur comhleádh sa mharana í.
Thug sí do an uile ní ansin,
            Is sa tíolacadh sin
Deineadh slad ar fad di –
            Frídín ní raibh fágtha
Dá croí ná dá haigne –
Bádh an uile ní sa ghrá.

The Queen of Sheba

le Hadewijch (13ú haois)
Leagan Béarla: Mother Columba Hart

The Queen of Sheba
Came to Solomon;
That was in order to gain wisdom.
When she had found him, indeed,
His wonders streamed upon her so suddenly
          That she melted in contemplation.
                    She gave him all,
                    And the gift robbed her
Of everything she had within --
                    In both heart and mind,
                    Nothing remained:
          Everything was engulfed in love.

Chuardaigh mo Chroí do Chumhracht

My heart searched for your fragrance

Sarmad (? - 1659)
Leagan Béarla Isaac A. Ezekiel

My heart searched for your fragrance
in the breeze moving at dawn,
my eyes searched for the flower of your face
    in the garden of creation.
Neither could lead me to your abode --
contemplation alone showed me the way.

Chuardaigh Mo Chroí Do Chumhracht

Chuardaigh mo chroí do chumhracht
i leoithne a ghluais sa chamhaoir,
chuardaigh mo shúile bláth do ghnúise
    i ngairdín na cruinne.
Ní thabharfadh ceachtar acu chun d’áitribh mé –
an rinnfheitheamh amháin a nocht an chonair dom

Cloisfear amhráin ó Cholm Ó Snodaigh (Kíla) chomh maith. Ceoltóir ildánach é an Snodach. Seinneann sé an fhliúit, an fheadóg stáin, an giotár, sacsafón agus cnaguirlisí. Tá amhráin i nGaeilge agus i mBéarla ar a albam aonair Giving.

‘He has re-located the Irish language and its people back in the cultural fulcrum of the European imaginary once more’
declared the Irish Times of his latest novel An Colm Bán.

Colm Ó Snodaigh of Kíla will also sing on the night. A multi-instrumentalist, Colm plays flute, tin whistle, guitar, saxophone and percussion. His solo album Giving features songs in English and Irish.

PORT AN tSAOIL: TIONSCADAL KATE BUSH - JIG OF LIFE: THE KATE BUSH PROJECT

IMRAM i gcomhar le Gaelspraoi/Féile Naomh Pádraig
Imram in association with Gaelspraoi/St Patrick’s Festival

Ealaíontóir thar a bheith neamhghnách í Kate Bush atá in ann rac, ceol clasaiceach agus ceol tíre a fhí ina bhréid álainn. Tá a cuid liricí an-drámatach agus scata foinsí liteartha agus cineamatagrafacha laistiar díobh a iniúchann téamaí na hóige, an ghrá, an bháis, na cogaíochta agus na miotaseolaíochta.  Theastódh guth ildánach aingiliúil uait chun tréithe uile Kate Bush a chur abhaile ar lucht féachana agus tá an tallann uathúil sin ag Caitríona O'Leary. Gabriel Rosenstock a thraschruthaigh na liricí i nGaeilge.

Comhoirfidigh Chaitríona anocht: Roger Doyle (méarchlár), Adrian Hart (fidil), Éamonn Galldubh (fliúit, feadóga, píb uilleann), Mark Keogh (seicheamhóir).

Cuirfidh Margaret Lonergan na liricí móide íomhánna gleoite ar scáileán.

Kate Bush is an artist like none other – weaving rock, classical and folk music to extraordinary effect. Her lyrics are highly dramatic, drawing on a wide range of literary and cinematic sources, exploring themes of childhood, love, death, war and mythology. Tonight Caitríona O’Leary – acclaimed by Crescendo Magazine for ‘her angelic and etheral voice - will perform the very best of Bush’s songs, transcreated into Irish by Gabriel Rosenstock.
She will be joined by Roger Doyle (keyboard), Adrian Hart (fiddle), Éamonn Galldubh (flute, whistles, uilleann pipes), Mark Keogh (sequencer). The show features on-screen projections of the lyrics with images created by Margaret Lonergan.

Ollchruinniú ag Aontas na Scríbhneoirí Gaeilge 7 Márta, 11:00-15:30

Beidh Ollchruinniú ag Aontas na Scríbhneoirí Gaeilge

Dé Sathairn 7 Márta, 11:00-15:30

san

Amharclann,
Institiúid na hÉireann,
Teach an Phiarsaigh,
Sráid an Phiarsaigh,
Baile Átha Cliath 2.

Tá dréachtaí ón Choiste Stiúrtha le dul os comhair an chruinnithe le leasú nó le glacadh leo trí vótáil agus tá oifigigh agus Coiste Stiúrtha 2015 le toghadh (Coiste Stiúrtha sealadach a toghadh an an ollchruinniú i mí Eanáir). Iarrtar oraibh na cáipéisí leis seo a scrúdú roimh ré agus má tá leasuithe le moladh iad a bheith réidh agaibh chun cabhrú le héifeacht an chruinnithe. Má tá tú sásta glacadh le hainmniúchán nó seasamh don choiste ach gan a bheith in ann freastal ar an chruinniú, cuir sin in iúil dúinn i scríbhinn, le do thoil.

De bharr gur gá do dhuine bheith ag príomh-dhoras Theach an Phiarsaigh chun daoine a scaoileadh isteach chuig an Amharclann ar chúl an tí, iarrtar ar dhaoine a bheith i láthair in am. Is féidir casadh le chéile sa Trinity Inn Hotel béal dorais má thagann tú mórán roimh am. Mar a cheile tar éis an tsosa don lón.

Tá súil agam go mbeidh ar do chumas a bheith ann chun páirt a ghlacadh sa phlé agus a bheith ar ais linn, i ndiaidh béile a chaitheamh, san Amharclann don ócáid liteartha agus cheoil atá á reáchtáil ag Imram, 18:00-20:00 agus do fháiltiú fíona.

The Rivals/ Na hIomaitheoirí

I heard a bird at dawn
Singing sweetly on a tree,
That the dew was on the lawn,
And the wind was on the lea ;
But I didn’t listen to him,
For he didn’t sing to me.

I didn’t listen to him,
For he didn’t sing to me
That the dew was on the lawn,
And the wind was on the lea ;
I was singing at the time
Just as prettily as he.

I was singing all the time,
Just as prettily as he,
About the dew upon the lawn
And the wind upon the lea ;
So I didn’t listen to him
As he sang upon a tree.

James Stephens (1880-1950)

Na hIomaitheoirí

Chuala éan ar maidin,
Ba bhinn é an t-amhrán
Faoin drúcht ar an bhfaiche
Is an ghaoth ar an mbán;
Ach níor éist mé lena rann
Mar nach domsa a chan.

Sea, níor éist me lena rann
Mar nach domsa a chan
Faoin drúcht ar an bhfaiche
Is an ghaoth ar an mbán;
Bhíos-sa féin ag canadh
Chomh binn leis siúd ar m’anam.

Sea, bhíos-sa féin ag canadh
Chomh binn leis siúd ar m’anam,
Faoin drúcht ar an bhfaiche,
Is an ghaoth ar an mbán;
Is níor éist mé leis ainneoin
Go mba bhinn é an t-amhrán.

haiku le Ryokan (1758 - 1831)

English version by Stephen Mitchell

the thief left it behind:
the moon
at my window.

d'fhág an gadaí ina dhiaidh í:
an ghealach

The Wind That Shakes the Barley /An Ghaoth i Measc na hEornan

Dearadh Angelee Deodhar

The Wind that Shakes the Barley

There's music in my heart all day,
I hear it late and early,
It comes from fields are far away,
The wind that shakes the barley.

Above the uplands drenched with dew
The sky hangs soft and pearly,
An emerald world is listening to
The wind that shakes the barley.

Above the bluest mountain crest
The lark is singing rarely,
It rocks the singer into rest,
The wind that shakes the barley.

Oh, still through summers and through springs
It calls me late and early.
Come home, come home, come home, it sings,
The wind that shakes the barley.
Katharine Tynan (1859-1931)

An Ghaoth i Measc na hEornan

Tá ceol im’ chroí an lá go léir
Ar maidin is tráthnóna,
Is cloisim é sa pháirc go glé,
An ghaoth i measc na heornan.

Is tá na huachtair tais le drúcht,
An spéir go péarlach lonrach,
Is tá an domhan glas ag tabhairt cluas
Don ghaoth i measc na heornan.

Thar bhuaic an tsléibhe ar feadh an lae
Fuiseog ag canadh i gcónaí,
Na nótaí binne is iad go séimh
Sa ghaoth i measc na heornan.

Is glaonn sí orm i ngach séasúr,
Ar maidin is tráthnóna,
Tar chugam, tar chugam, ar sí go suairc
An ghaoth i measc na heornan.
Gabriel Rosenstock

Is áille Íosa ná an chruinne

Risteárd de Buitléar

(Translated from the Irish by Gabriel Rosenstock)

A poem from the early years of the sixteenth century. As his name suggests, the poet was of Norman stock. A note on the manuscript informs us that he composed it on his last day on earth.

More beautiful than the world is Jesus
   lovelier than lily or rose;
delightful flower of Mary
   among us made abode.

Sweeter than sugar grains
    than honey dew on thorn
than the life-full balm of bees
the One to us was born.

Whoever loves Jesus
     warmly deep inside,
no other love enters him
        until the last tide.

Jesus full of sweetness,
Jesus, Mary’s Son,
you fashioned every water meadow,
each smooth plain, each thorn.

Is áille Íosa ná an chruinne

Is áille Íosa ná an chruinne
        a’s ná bláth róis nó lile;
is tú, a bhláth chaomh ó Mhuire,
        a chuaigh i ngnáthghaol linne.

Is milse ná siúcra
        a’s ná drúcht meala muine
a’s ná míl bhríoch bheacha
        Íosa mór, Mac Mhuire.

Cibé a ghránn Íosa
        ina chroí go cluthar,
ní théann aon ghrá eile
        ann go deireadh an domhain.

A Íosa mhóir mhilis,
        a Íosa, Mac Mhuire,
dhealbhaigh tú gach inis,
        gach mínmhaigh, gach muine.

Lean out of the window (James Joyce)/Tar go dtí an fhuinneog

File: James Joyce
Cumadóir: Syd Barrett
Lean out of the window,
    Goldenhair,
I heard you singing
    A merry air.

My book is closed;
    I read no more,
Watching the fire dance
    On the floor.

I have left my book,
    I have left my room,
For I heard you singing
    Through the gloom,

Singing and singing
    A merry air.
Lean out of the window,
    Goldenhair.

Tar go dtí an fhuinneog

Tar go dtí an fhuinneog
    ‘Niamh Chinn Óir.
Chuala tú ’canadh
    I do bhinnghlór.

Dhúnas an leabhar.
    Ní léim níos mó.
Breathnaím ar lasracha
    Ó óró.

D’fhágas an leabhar.
    Is an seomra d’fhág
Mar chuala mé amhrán
    Tríd an scáil.

Ag canadh os ard
    I do bhinnghlór.
Tar go dtí an fhuinneog
    ’Niamh Chinn Óir.

Aus meinen Tränen sprießen / As mo chuid deor eascraíonn

File: Heinrich Heine
Cumadóir: Schumann
Aus meinen Tränen sprießen
Viel blühende Blumen hervor,
Und meine Seufzer werden
Ein Nachtigallenchor.

Und wenn du mich lieb hast, Kindchen,
Schenk' ich dir die Blumen all',
Und vor deinem Fenster soll klingen
Das Lied der Nachtigall.

As mo chuid deor eascraíonn

As mo chuid deor eascraíonn
An iliomad flóisín, a stór,
Déantar de m’osnaí cléibhe
Guth éanlaithe i gcór.

Is má tá tú mór liom, ‘stóirín,
Gheobhaidh tú uaim an pósae glé,
Is cloisfidh tú os comhair na fuinneoig’
Amhrán i ngob an éin.

When rooks fly homeward/ Préacháin ag Filleadh

File: Joseph Campbell
Cumadóir: (Scata Éagsúil)
When rooks fly homeward
And shadows fall,
When roses fold
On the hay-yard wall,
When blind moths flutter
By door and tree,
Then comes the quiet
Of Christ to me.

When stars look out
On the Children's Path,
And grey mists gather
On carn and rath,
When night is one
With the brooding sea,
Then comes the quiet
of Christ to me.
Préacháin ag filleadh
Is titeann scáth,
An rós fá shuan
San iothlainn tá,
Na leamhain dhalla
’Na n-eitilt rúin
Is seoltar síth
Ár dTiarna chugam.

Nuair ’bhreathnaíonn réalt’
Ar an Ógchosán,
Nuair a chruinníonn ceo
Go dlúth sa ráth,
Nuair ’théann an oích’
Sa sáile ciúin
Sea ’sheoltar síth
Ár dTiarna chugam.

“Ná caith do chuid ama ag scríobh dánta nó aistí ar Zen . . .”
Nyogen Senzaki

Is fada anois ó leagas súil ar dhamhán alla
ach tá an t-am féin tamall maith in easnamh:
Cad is am damháin alla ann?
An ndeir sé leis féin,
‘Tá tamall maith anois ann ambaist ó nocht mo dhuine
an scrioblálaí a thugann faoi deara mé
is nach gá dom eagla a bheith orm roimhe.’
Dá nochtfadh sé anois, an damhán alla,
d’fhéadfaimis ár gcuid móideanna a thabhairt arís:
Gan cur isteach ar a chéile go deo
ár gconair féin a leanúint
scéalta a fhí, neamhspleách ar a chéile.

Creathán sa líon folamh.
An bhfuil sé chugainn? An damhán alla? As an bhfolús?
Níl, níl ann ach feoithne
séideán as ball éigin

Nó an aigne, díreach, gluaiseacht
shíodúil na haigne

Empty Cobweb

“Do not spend time writing poems or essays on Zen . . .”
Nyogen Senzaki

A long time now since I have seen a spider
but time, too, has been such a long while away:
What is spider-time?
Does spider think,
‘A long time now since that bloke appeared
the scribbler who notices me
the one I needn’t fear.’
If only he would show up now, spider,
we could renew our vows –
never to interfere with each other
go our own way
weave our tales, independently.

The empty cobweb flutters.
Is he coming? Spider? From nowhere?
No, it’s only a breeze
a draught from somewhere

Or the mind, simply, silky
movement of mind

Es fiel ein Reif in der Frühlingsnacht /Bhí Sioc a Thit

File: Heinrich Heine
(Bunaithe ar Amhrán de chuid na nDaoine)
Es fiel ein Reif in der Frühlingsnacht,
Es fiel auf die zarten Blaublümelein:
Sie sind verwelket, verdorrt.

Ein Jüngling hatte ein Mädchen lieb;
Sie flohen heimlich von Hause fort,
Es wußt' weder Vater noch Mutter.

Sie sind gewandert hin und her,
Sie haben gehabt weder Glück noch Stern,
Sie sind verdorben, gestorben.

Bhí Sioc A Thit

Bhí sioc a thit is an tEarrach ann
Do thit mo léir ar an mbláithín gorm:
Do chrom an bláithín, is dhreoigh.

Ógánach thit i ngrá le bé
Is chuaigh faoi rún i bhfad i gcéin,
I ngan fhios don athair is máthair.

Ar fán a chuadar thuaidh is theas
Ach ‘Mhuire is trua, bhí an mí-ádh leo
San úir atá siad, [táid] caillte.

Three Words from Nyogen

The whole business was explained to me
in the following three words
-anicca
-dukkha
-anatta
how wonderful
what are they? what do they say
maybe they're nothing but meaningless syllables
a call to ducks
to pigs
come! eat!
swallow those words . . .
consume anicca dukkha anatta
chew them well
- anicca
the mind
and the body
yes, what about them?
impermanent
and the world in which they live
impermanent
that is anicca
are you with me?
no, because we imagine
the mind, the body, the world to be permanent
solid
and this is dukkha
this suffering
this misery
for all things dissolve
as foam on the river
and are swept away
and if we have no hold
on the mind
or the body
or the world -
and we don't -
this brings us to anatta
who are you then?
anatta
who are you in this turmoil
this confusion
this impermanence
anatta
find the stream
that has no begininng
no end
turn off the tv
look - the little shoes of your grand-daughter
how very still they are

Du bist die Ruh/ An Scíth is Tú

File: Friedrich Rückert
Cumadóir: Franz Schubert
Du bist die Ruh,
Der Friede mild,
Die Sehnsucht du
Und was sie stillt.

Ich weihe dir
Voll Lust und Schmerz
Zur Wohnung hier
Mein Aug und Herz.

Kehr ein bei mir,
Und schließe du
Still hinter dir
Die Pforten zu.

Treib andern Schmerz
Aus dieser Brust!
Voll sei dies Herz
Von deiner Lust.

Dies Augenzelt
Von deinem Glanz
Allein erhellt,
O füll es ganz!

An scíth is tú

An scíth is tú
An tsíocháin shéimh,
Is tú an tnúth
Is ina dhéidh.

Is beannaím thú
Le sult is crá
Cuir fút im bhrú,
Im shúil, im lár.

Bí liom, a mhian
Is dún go ciúin
Na geat’ id dhiaidh
Go ciúin, a rún.

Is ruaig ar fán
An uile phian:
Mo chroíse lán
Go barr ded’ mhian.

Altóir mo shúl
Ag lonrú tá
Ód dhrithliú –
Ó, líon go barr!

You are the forest/Is Tú an fhoraois

Le Akka Mahadevi (12ú Aois)

Is Tú an fhoraois

is Tú na crainn mhóra go léir
san fhoraois

is Tú an t-éan is an t-ainmhí
isteach is amach ag súgradh
i measc na gcrann

a Thiarna atá chomh geal le seasmain
a líonann cách - atá líonta ag cách

cén fáth
nach nochtfá dhom Do ghnúis?

You are the forest

you are all the great trees
in the forest

you are bird and beast
playing in and out
of all the trees

O lord white as jasmine
filling and filled by all

why don't you
show me your face?

Mein Mädel hat einen Rosenmund / Mar Rós atá a Béilín Mín

Volkslied/ Amhrán de chuid na ndaoine
Mein Mädel hat einen Rosenmund,
Und wer ihn küßt, der wird gesund;

Wenn nur zwei Sternlein funkeln drin;
O du! o du! o du!
O du schwarzbraunes Mägdelein,
Du la la la la!
Du läßt mir keine Ruh!

Du Mädel bist wie der Himmel gut,
Wenn er über uns blau sich wölben tut;
O du! o du! o du!
O du schwarzbraunes Mägdelein,
Du la la la la!
Du läßt mir keine Ruh!

Mar Rós atá a Béilín Mín

Mar rós atá a béilín mín
Tabhair póigín di má tá tú tinn
Is tú is tú is tú
Is tú, is tú mo chailín donn
Seinn lá lá lá lá
Táim ciaptha lán de bhuairt!

A leiceann tá mar dheargnéal
Is sneachta geal ar bharr an tsléi’.
Is tú is tú is tú
Is tú, is tú mo chailín donn
Seinn lá lá lá lá
Táim ciaptha lán de bhuairt!

Mar oíche dhorcha atá do shúil’
Is gan ach réalt nó dhó ‘lonrú
Is tú is tú is tú
Is tú, is tú mo chailín donn
Seinn lá lá lá lá
Táim ciaptha lán de bhuairt!

A spéirbhean án ó neamh anuas
An spéir ’na cuar geal gorm chugainn
Is tú is tú is tú
Is tú, is tú mo chailín donn
Seinn lá lá lá lá
Táim ciaptha lán de bhuairt!

A Sioux Prayer

Translated by Chief Yellow Lark - 1887

Oh, Great Spirit, whose voice I hear in the winds
Whose breath gives life to the world, hear me
I come to you as one of your many children
I am small and weak
I need your strength and wisdom

May I walk in beauty
Make my eyes ever behold the red and purple sunset.
Make my hands respect the things you have made
And my ears sharp to your voice.
Make me wise so that I may know the things you have taught your children

The lessons you have written in every leaf and rock

Make me strong--------!

Not to be superior to my brothers, but to fight my greatest enemy....myself

Make me ever ready to come to you with straight eyes,
So that when life fades as the fading sunset,
May my spirit come to you without shame.

Paidir de chuid na Sioux

An Taoiseach Fuiseog Bhuí a d'aistrigh - 1887

Ó, a Mhórspioraid, a gcloisim do ghuth ar an ngaoth
A dtugann d'anáil beatha don domhan, éist liom
Tagaim chugat mar bhall ded chlann líonmhar
Nach mé atá beag agus lag
Tá do neart uaim is do ghaois.

Go siúla mé faoin áilleacht
Go bhféacha mo shúile de shíor ar luí na gréine, dearg, corcra,
Go raibh meas ag mo lámha ar gach a ndearna tú
Go raibh mo chluasa ar bior ag éisteacht led ghuth.
Bronn orm an ghaois chun go dtuigfidh mé do chuid ráiteas

Na ceachtanna atá scríofa agat ar gach duilleog is carraig

Neartaigh mé - !

Ní chun mo dheartháireacha a shárú ach an namhaid is mó atá agam a chloí ... mé féin.

Go raibh mé ullamh i gcónaí chun teacht os do chomhair le súile macánta
I dtreo is go ngluaisfeadh mo spioradsa chugat gan náire
Is an bheatha ag éag mar luí na gréine ag dul ó léas.

Love's old sweet song/ Seanamhráinín Grá

File: G. Clifton Bingham
Cumadóir: J.L. Molloy
Once in the dear dead days beyond recall.
When on the world the mists began to fall,
Out of the dreams that rose in happy throng
Low to our hearts love sang an old sweet song
And in the dusk where fell the firelight gleam
Softly it wove itself into our dream

Just a song at twilight
When the lights are low,
And the flickering shadows
Softly come and go
Though the heart be weary,
Sad the day and long,
Still to us at twilight comes love's old song
Comes love's old sweet song.

Even today we hear love's song of yore
Deep in our hearts it dwells forever more
Footsteps may falter, weary grows our way
Still we can hear it at the close of day
So till the end when life's dim shadows fall
Love will be found the sweetest song of all.

Just a song at twilight
When the lights are low,
And the flickering shadows
Softly come and go

Though the heart be weary,
Sad the day and long,
Still to us at twilight comes love's old song
Comes love's old sweet song.

Seanamhráinín Grá

Tráth in sna laethanta úd atá gan fáil
Nuair do thit an ceo ar an domhan ina scáil
As saol na n-aislingí uair, uair amháin, Chualamar os íseal an seanamhrán
Agus sa chróntráth fadó ó fadó
Bhí an t-amhrán sin mar chuid dár mbrionglóid.

Amhráinín tráthnóna is an domhan faoi scáil,
Is na scátha’ ag preabadh,
'léim abhus is thall,
Tá an croí go tnáite is is fada an lá
Fós sa chróntráth tagann
amhráinín grá
Sean-amhráinín grá.
br/> Fós ’dtí inniu is clos an seanamhrán
Sa chroí istigh a mhaireann sé faoi bhláth,
Lag í an choiscéim, is tuirsiúil é an ród
Ach cloistear fós é, mar a bhí fadó.
Go dtí an chríoch – nuair nach mbeidh ann ach ceo –
Mairfidh an grá is mairfidh sé go deo.

Amhráinín tráthnóna is an domhan faoi scáil,
Is na scátha’ ag preabadh,
’ léim abhus is thall,
Tá an croí go tnáite is is fada an lá
Fós sa chróntráth tagann amhráinín grá
Sean-amhráinín grá.
