A reading of poems by Martin Walser in German, English and Irish is presented by the Goethe-Institut Irland and the Centre for Literary Translation at Trinity College Dublin on 26 November. The poem collection is „Brennende Blumen – Burning Flowers – Bláthanna á nDó“, published by Irish publisher Coiscéim.

In addition to the German poems – read by Peter Arnds, director of the TCD School of Languages, Literature and Cultural Studies – the long-standing translators Hans-Christian Oeser and Gabriel Rosenstock are going to read from the English and Irish translations.

Walser, who is widely famous for numerous novels such as „Ehen in Philippsburg“ (Marriage in Philippsburg, 1957), „Ein springender Brunnen“ (A Gushing Fountain, 1998) and „Das dreizehnte Kapitel“ (The 13th chapter, 2012), has also published many very personal poems in his diaries „Leben und Schreiben“ (Live and write, 2005, 2008, 2010), published in three volumes. Coiscéim has collected and commissioned translations of a selection of them, spanning the years 1951-1978. The mood and themes from Walser’s novels is also reflected in his poetry, as Oeser notes in the book’s foreword: “Hurts, upsets and grievances – these are the common thread characterizing the discomforting miniatures … They are splinters from a self-reflective consciousness that revolve around a distinct but precarious and threatened ego constantly in flight from himself.”

Gabriel Rosenstock is the author-translator of over 170 books, mostly in Irish. His latest books are Sasquatch, a bilingual volume of poems from Arlen House and The Naked Octopus, erotic haiku from Evertype.

Hans-Christian Oeser is an author, translator and editor. In 1997 he was awarded the European Translator’s Award Aristeion for “Der Schlächterbursche” (The Butcher Boy) by Patrick McCabe.
