An Ind fadó/ ancient India

i láthair a tuismitheoirí
níor lig sí faic uirthi
nuair a ghabhais thar bráid,
ach an deoir a chloígh lena cuid fabhraí
do thit ar dhúnadh na súl di

in front of her parents
she showed no emotion
when you passed by,
but a tear that clung to her lashes
fell when she closed her eyes

nach méanar dóibh siúd a chónaíonn
i sráidbhaile sléibhe
is iad ag déanamh suirí
gan aon chur isteach orthu
faoi sceach dhuilleogach
nó sa leaba luachra
a lúbann is a luascann sa ghaoth

lucky are they who live
in a mountain village
where one can make love
undisturbed
beneath a leafy hedge
or in deep thickets of reeds
that bend and sway in the wind

ná cuir do chuid ama amú
le bláthanna cumhra, a amadáin
tarraing an sciorta dem chromáin.
cé air a nglaofainnse sa choill seo?
tá an sráidbhaile i bhfad uainn
is táimse liom féin

why waste your time with sweetwood flowers,
you silly?
just pull the skirt from my hips.
whom can I call to in this wood?
the village is a long way off
and I am all by myself

toisc go bhfuil fúithi bualadh lena leannán anocht
agus an oíche an-dorcha
suas síos an t-urlár léi
agus a súile druidte go docht

because even on this dark night
she intends to meet her lover,
the girl paces up and down indoors
with her eyes tightly shut
