caoineann sé arís anocht
an moncaí aonair i nGoa
gan suan gan srann
a shearc, cá bhfuilir anois
an ré á ceilt ag néal
it cries again tonight
orphan monkey in Goa
it cannot sleep
beloved, where are you now
the moon hides behind a cloud
Hij weent weer vanavond
het weesaapje in Goa
hij kan iet slapen
schatje, waar ben je nu
de maan schuilt achter een wolk

Il pleure encore cette nuit
le singe orphelin à Goa
il ne peut dormir
bien-aimée où es-tu maintenant
la lune se cache derrière un nuage

heute abend schreit er wieder
der verwaiste aff in Goa
er kann nicht schlafen
geliebte, wo weilst du jetzt
der mond verhüllt sich hinter einer wolke

Anois agus an chóisir thart
is suaithinseach mar a thiteann tost
ar an uile ní atá fágtha
níos troime ná roimhe sin.
Anois agus gach éinne imithe abhaile
suíonn ansin leis féin, gan mhaith.
Gan éinne thart a thuilleadh chun breathnú air,
méar a leagan air, é a úsáid,
a áilleacht nó a gháifeacht a mheas.
Tá a áit uathúil féin ag an uile rud
agus éiríonn ceanúil uirthi le himeacht ama.
Ach nuair a fhágtar leis féin é cailltear
a bhrí is a ghus, bíonn sé ar nós
cuma liom, gan luail.
Fágtar leis féin é i gcúl ama,
tréigthe i spás
an tseomra seo, gan tábhacht
go dtí go n-ardaítear arís é,
cuspóir nua á thabhairt dó,
a ainm á rá,
á athbheochan sa tslí sin, gan mhilleadh.
Níl aon ní chomh huaigneach
le rud iarmhair.
Braitheann an uile rud beo orainne.
Nuair a fhéachaimid orthu, is ann dóibh.
Nuair a dhúnaimid ár súile, ní hann.
Ní beo ach don ní is léir dúinn.
An uile ní a bhraithimid
ullmhaíonn sé é féin i gcomhair an uaignis
atá ag feitheamh leis.
THE LONELINESS OF AN OBJECT
Now that the party’s over
it’s conspicuous how silence falls
on every object left behind
heavier than ever before.
Now that everyone’s left for home
it sits there, alone and useless.
No one still around to look at it,
to touch it or to use it,
find it beautiful or gaudy.
Each object has its unique place
to which it grows attached in time.
But when it’s left alone its meaning
disappears, it’s robbed of potency,
impassive and incapable of motion
Left behind in time,
alone and abandoned in the space
of this room, without significance
until someone lifts it up again,
gives it renewed purpose,
calls it by its name
and thus restores it, makes it pristine.
There’s nothing quite as lonely
as an object left behind.
All things depend on us for their existence.
When we look at them, they’re there.
When we close our eyes, they’re not.
Only what we see exists.
And everything we touch or hold
prepares itself , gets ready
for the loneliness awaiting it.
