Cloch - Charles Simic

Cloch

Dul isteach i gcloch
Sin an rud a dhéanfainnse.
Ligimis do dhuine eile a bheith ina cholmán
Nó gníoscarnach a bhaint as fiacla tíogair.
Táimse sásta a bheith im' chloch.

Ón dtaobh amuigh is mistéir í an chloch:
Níl a réiteach ag éinne.
Ach caithfidh gur fionnuar ciúin í ina croí istigh
Fiú má leagann bó iomlán a meáchain uirthi,
Fiú má chaitheann leanbh san abhainn í;
Síos leis an gcloch go mall, ar nós cuma liom,
Go grinneall na habhann
Go dtagann na héisc is cnagann uirthi
Is éisteann.

Tá splancacha feicthe agamsa
Nuair a cuimlíodh dhá chloch dá chéile,
Mar sin, seans nach dorcha atá sé in aon chor istigh;
D'fhéadfadh solas a bheith ag teacht ó ré
Áit éigin, mar a bheadh laistiar de chnoc -
Díreach dóthain léis chun na scríbhinní aite
Á dhéanamh amach, cairteacha réaltaí
Ar na fallaí istigh.

Stone

Go inside a stone
That would be my way.
Let somebody else become a dove
Or gnash with a tiger’s tooth.
I am happy to be a stone.

From the outside the stone is a riddle:
No one knows how to answer it.
Yet within, it must be cool and quiet
Even though a cow steps on it full weight,
Even though a child throws it in a river;
The stone sinks, slow, unperturbed
To the river bottom
Where the fishes come to knock on it
And listen.

I have seen sparks fly out
When two stones are rubbed,
So perhaps it is not dark inside after all;
Perhaps there is a moon shining
From somewhere, as though behind a hill—
Just enough light to make out
The strange writings, the star-charts
On the inner walls.

Stane

Gae inby a stane
Yon wad be ma wey.
Lat anither becum a doo
Or chirk wi a teeger's tuith.
A'm fain tae be a stane.

Frae the ootside the stane's a riddle:
Naebodie kens the repone tae't.
Yit inby, it maun be cuil'n quate
E'en gin a coo tramps on't wi aw'ts wecht,
E'en gin a bairn flings it i the watter;
The stane slumps, slaw, yaukin lik
Tae the watter's boddom
Whaur fush cum tae chap on't
An hearken.

A hae gliskit sperks flee oot
Whan twa stanes'r chappit thegither,
So aiblins it's no sae derk inby efter aw;
Aiblins thayr's a muin sheenin
Frae sum airt, as tho ahint a brae -
Juist eneuch licht tae mak oot
The eldritch scrievins, the stern-chairts
On the wa's inby.
