STAIR le Charles Simic

Scanrúil greannmhar iad scéalta ár mbeatha
Mar aghaidh fidil a chaitheann páistí Oíche Shamhna
Agus iad ag dul ó dhoras go doras
Greim láimhe acu ar na rudaí beaga
I gcomharsanacht éigin a leagadh fadó,

Áit a n-itheadh daoine dinnéar
I dtost feargach nó ag argóint os ard,
Is tháinig cnag ar an doras,
Cnag ciúin a dhéanfadh garsún cúthail
Gléasta in éide a dhein a mháthair.

Cad atá á chaitheamh agat, a gharsúin?
Agus cá bhfuairis an masc sin?
Chuir sé sin gach éinne againn anseo ag gáire
Agus tusa id' sheasamh ag stánadh orainn,
Faoi mar b’eol duit cheana go mba stair sinn.

History

Our life stories are scary and droll,
Like masks children wear on Hallowe'en
As they go from door to door
Holding the little ones by the hand
In some neighborhood long torn down,

Where people ate their dinners
In angry silence or quarreling loudly,
When there was a knock on the door,
A soft knock a shy boy makes
Dressed in a costume his mother made.

What's this you're wearing, kid?
And where did you get that mask?
That made everyone laugh here
While you stood staring at us,
As if you knew already we were history.

HISTORY

The tales o oor lives'r fearsum'n paukie,
Lik fause faces bairns weir it guisin tyme
As they stravaig frae door tae door
Haudin the peerier yins bi the haun
In sum backlans lang dung doon,

Whaur fowk supped thayr brose
In a dour quate or argifeein loodly,
Whan thayr cam a chap it the door,
A saft chap a blate laddie maks
Cleedit in an ootrig his mither wrocht.

Whit's this ye're cleedit in, laddie?
An hou cam ye bi this fause face?
Thit gart awbodie lauch here
While ye stood gaupin it us,
As if ye kent awready we war history.

Τι είναι αυτό που φοράς, μικρέ;
Και που τη βρήκες αυτή τη μάσκα;
